After many unexpected life events and a long unexplained hiatus, Jon and Vinnie return with an extra special episode of Simply Devotion! In this special “Behind The Scenes” episode Jon and Vinnie will give you a deep personal insight into their lives and ministries and explain to you why they have been away so long and what to expect next.

This is not your regular formatted podcast episode but rather this is a time to sit back with a good cup of coffee and get caught up with old friends. Not only is it a catch-up opportunity but it is also a more open-ended format to hopefully help our podcast listeners understand and grasp pastor Vinnie and Jon as people with real lives, complex ministries, and interests outside of what you normally hear in the podcast. We are calling this Behind-The-Scenes because we are going where we have not gone before in this season.  We are going beyond the content and into the lives of the content creators themselves.

Simply Devotion will continue to move forward and we are super thankful for all our faithful listeners who have reached out to us to ask when the next episode is coming. It is because of you all, it is here!

About Vinnie & Jon:

Vinnie is a full-time Ordained Pastor at Vienna Seventh-day Adventist Church in Vienna VA located in the beautiful Northern Virginia / DC area. He is happily married to TinaLynn for over 30 years and they have an eight-year-old son, Jose. They live, work,  and Jose goes to school, on the Vienna Campus as a part of an incarnational approach to ministry. They believe in an integrated ministry approach that is balanced with a full and abundant balanced life. Core to being balanced is being centered in Pastor Vinnie’s favorite Gospel; the Gospel of John, and his favorite Bible verse in that Gospel; John 10:10.  “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness (abundantly)“. Living life “in all its fullness” means both being incarnational and at the same time authentically human and having fun! He describes himself as a “Child of God. Husband. Daddy. Work in progress. PODCAST| Convictions From The Mount

Pastor Vinnie and Jon continue the second part in their three-part series on the Sermon On The Mount. The Sermon On The Mount is not only the most popular sermon Jesus preached it is also one of the most hard-hitting. In this episode, we get deep into come of the convictions Jesus is looking to provoke in this sermon.
Jesus is not pulling any punches in this sermon. He wants us to see that high calling He alone can raise us up to embrace. When we grasp what Jesus is saying in this part of the sermon we are forever changed! This is the core message of Jesus from the mount. It’s about conviction, acceptance, and reframing everything you thought you knew about God and the way the world works.

In his famous book on the Sermon on the Mount Dallas Willard explained interacting with the discord of Jesus from the mount like this;

“Recently a pilot was practicing high-speed maneuvers in a jet fighter. She turned the controls for what she thought was a steep ascent—and flew straight into the ground. She was unaware that she had been flying upside down. This is a parable of human existence in our times—not exactly that everyone is crashing, though there is enough of that—but most of us as individuals, and world society as a whole, live at high-speed, and often with no clue to whether we are flying upside down or right-side up. Indeed, we are haunted by a strong suspicion that there may be no difference—or at least that it is unknown or irrelevant.”  ― Dallas Willard, The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life In God

Jonathan graciously agreed to join Vinnie as of Season 2 of Simply Devotion. Jonathan is a full-time follower of Jesus, committed to helping people discover a deep, passionate, and spirited relationship with the Savior. He is currently a Bible teacher at a private school in the Orlando area but has also served as an ordained minister for almost a decade in local churches. Jonathan completed his undergraduate degree at Southern Adventist University and holds a Master of Divinity degree from the Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Seminary on the campus of Andrews University. He is currently completing a Doctor of Ministry degree with an emphasis in Ministry to Emerging Generations from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Jonathan is married to the love of his life, Raisel Martin, and has two elementary-aged children, Railyn and Josiah. In his spare time, Jonathan enjoys reading, writing, painting, globetrotting, and instigating arguments on social media.

About Seasons two… While season 1 is still in the archives, for those who want to review it, each season of this podcast is a little be different than the last. Last season I (Pastor Vinnie) focused on mostly stand-alone topics.
I had occasional guests yet, I was the main presenter. This season we are changing things up. Our focus for this full season is the historical Jesus; including his culture, people, political situation, and geographical footprint. I am joined by Jonathan Martin who is my new co-host for the season!
