Jerusalem has come to be one of the least likely places we’d look to find peace. But the final battle is not over yet. The Book of Revelation actually has a lot to say about this city’s final fate. PODCAST| The Historical Certainty Of The Cross

Pastor Vinnie and Jon deeply explore both consensuses of modern scholars, as well as the political and theological reasons, as to why we can be certain that the historical Jesus really died on the cross for us. We are finishing up the Passion Week of Jesus we divide into the absolute historical certainty of the cross!

This is perhaps one of our most in-depth episodes this season so far this season and you will be thrilled with the certainty that Jesus finished the passion week dying for our sins. In this episode, we not only survey want several different scholars from outside of Christianity have to say about the cross of Jesus but we take a long hard look at the political role Pontius Pilate was put into and discuss the complex political realities of the cross and its timing.

At the Cross, two distinct political worldviews come into conflict; 1. The Roman and 2. The Jewish. And what is the conflict they must face? Who is Jesus of Nazareth? Is he really the King of the Jews? They provide an answer by putting Him on the Cross. It is on the Cross that we see most clearly who Jesus is and to what length He will go to make sure that both Roman, and Jews, have every possible opportunity to come to terms with who he really is. And so it is for us too today; The Historical certainty of the Cross asks us all to decide who really was Jesus of Nazareth? Was he just a good moral teacher? Was he just a renegade teacher trying to cast doubt on the Jewish elite leadership of the time? Was he a zealot seeking to rally Judah to stir up an insurrection against Rome? Or is He the Savior of the world? Since the historicity of the Cross can not be doubted these questions are real questions all serious students of history must now ask. Just in time for Easter week, we present the passion week of Jesus! Jon and Vinnie get deep into the historical Jesus and his last week before his crucifixion. Jesus in the passion week marched into Jerusalem with the populace declaring him King, but he refused to be crowned. Learn the lesson of the fig tree in the last week of Jesus’s life. The fig tree, the people, and the supper, all declare His truest passion for you!

The people has a passion to see Jesus crowned King in Jerusalem at the temple but Jesus had a greater passion. His passion was beyond human passion. His passion was His Father’s sole reason for sending Jesus into the world. His passion was for more they power, fame, and the recognition of the great crowds shouting Hosanna and they came over the Mount of Olives, and Jesus road the Donkey down the hill to the temple. As the disciples bask in the triumphal entry of Jesus they had no way of knowing of the great betrayal that would await them at the end of the week in the upper room with Jesus and Judas. Jesus would be king, but he would not be the kind of king they expected nor foresaw. For men seek power as a passion but Jesus sought our redemption as the only passion worth giving His life for.

Have you ever thought of Jesus as outrageous? There is a reason they said he spoke as one with authority and not like the teachers of the law. He was unconventional, provocative, and a master of the art of storytelling. Join pastor Vinnie and Jon as they dive into the outrageousness of Jesus, the stories he told, and the way he said hidden things to say direct messages.

We tend to see Jesus as simple, humble, and calm and we are not wrong about that perception of Him. However, that is not the only fact we need to understand about Jesus. He taught us to not only be as harmless as doves but to also be as wise are serpents. Jesus had “punch” in his preaching. He did not fear being outrageous when compared with modern ideas about established religion. This is why the Gospels repeatedly say about His teaching that He had authority, and not as their scribes and teachers (Matthew 7:29).

One of the key ways Jesus did this was by speaking in coded stories we call parables. Parables are a key power preaching method that Jesus used and that we need to understand in order to grasp all the authority and power that Jesus is seeking to speak to us in. When were understand the way Jesus layers truth on top of truth by pushing our buttons in these mini-stories the New Testament Gospels will come alive to us with whole new depths of understanding.

In this podcast episode, we will learn all about parables and why Jesus used them. Where did the tradition of parables come from? Did they exist before Jesus? Are all parable factional true? And did Jesus teach other people parables?

In this episode, we will explore what it means to judge someone and what is the cost of judging people? We will look up to Heaven and ask hard questions about how we use money and why? We will again return to core principles and come full circle to understand being poor in spirit is to be ready to be rich in Jesus.

In this thrilling conclusion of this three-part series on the sermon on the mount, we see the clearest yet that this is a declaration that the Kingdom of God is based on virtue. Kingdom Virtue is the political stance of Jesus, and he calls all who take His name to stand up and live a life of virtue and not to live in the empty ways of the Pharisees and their times. As we see the high value Jesus puts on virtue in this coming Kingdom we are following the narrow way too it forces us to reconsider our own values and loyalties as we measure our own level of virtue. The picture of the coming Kingdom Jesus presents on his mount is a Kingdom of love, justice, truth, and mercy.

Just as Jesus called His followers at His time to higher virtue He is not calling us all to higher living. He is calling us to live Kingdom Virtue.

The Sermon On The Mount is not only the most popular sermon Jesus preached it is also one of the most hard-hitting. In this episode, we get deep into come of the convictions Jesus is looking to provoke in this sermon.
Jesus is not pulling any punches in this sermon. He wants us to see that high calling He alone can raise us up to embrace. When we grasp what Jesus is saying in this part of the sermon we are forever changed! This is the core message of Jesus from the mount. It’s about conviction, acceptance, and reframing everything you thought you knew about God and the way the world works.

In his famous book on the Sermon on the Mount Dallas Willard explained interacting with the discord of Jesus from the mount like this;

“Recently a pilot was practicing high-speed maneuvers in a jet fighter. She turned the controls for what she thought was a steep ascent—and flew straight into the ground. She was unaware that she had been flying upside down. This is a parable of human existence in our times—not exactly that everyone is crashing, though there is enough of that—but most of us as individuals, and world society as a whole, live at high-speed, and often with no clue to whether we are flying upside down or right-side up. Indeed, we are haunted by a strong suspicion that there may be no difference—or at least that it is unknown or irrelevant.”  ― Dallas Willard, The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life In God

If this sermon is the apex sermon of Jesus, as I believe it is, then understanding the depth of the Beatitudes is the keys to the Kingdom.

Jonathan Martin: Season 2 Co-host

Jonathan graciously agreed to join Vinnie as of Season 2 of Simply Devotion. Jonathan is a full-time follower of Jesus, committed to helping people discover a deep, passionate, and spirited relationship with the Savior. He is currently a Bible teacher at a private school in the Orlando area but has also served as an ordained minister for almost a decade in local churches. Jonathan completed his undergraduate degree at Southern Adventist University and holds a Master of Divinity degree from the Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Seminary on the campus of Andrews University. He is currently completing a Doctor of Ministry degree with an emphasis in Ministry to Emerging Generations from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Jonathan is married to the love of his life, Raisel Martin, and has two elementary-aged children, Railyn and Josiah. In his spare time, Jonathan enjoys reading, writing, painting, globetrotting, and instigating arguments on social media.
