In this two-part series, we focus on the ancient historical origins of the city and why it was important to Abraham, David, and Jesus. In part one we explore particularly the ironic nature of its roots as it passes hands from Melchizedek to Abraham and then from David to Jesus. As we watch Jerusalem rise in the Old Testament as the beloved city of Peace and Righteousness, it becomes a symbol of hope and communion with Heaven, which makes it shocking when in the New Testament Jesus declares its destruction! Jerusalem is the very city of which Jesus, Himself, wept over, and cried out, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.” (Matthew 23:37) What is so special about Jerusalem? Why did Jesus speak of Jerusalem as being a place that kills? Doesn’t Jerusalem, itself, mean the City of Peace? Pastor Vinnie invites his long-term friend Peter Thomas to join Vinnie and Jon on a two-part episode to answer all these questions and more while exploring the connection between the Historical Jesus and the history of the city called Jerusalem or Salem.
